Being Free and True to Yourself

by Kevin Sinclair -

Truth symbolizes goodness, faith, honesty, sincerity and integrity of character.

Being true to your own self is like being in harmony with reality, in harmony with Nature. It is like being reconciled with things as they are and being one with the Universe.

Sadly, our hectic lifestyles, peer pressure, small pleasures and our endless passion for money have destroyed the core values of truth.

Many of us believe in what we would like to believe and do what we feel based on these beliefs, even though our thoughts and actions are miles away from the truth. And, to tell you the truth, we have ceased to be honest to ourselves.

Many of us live in a world polluted with ignorance, greed and falsities.

Though we may not realize it, our soul is getting a little too choked up with these untruths, all that pseudo-talk and that jazzy false pride - always seeking accolades in the eyes of others while remaining dishonest and untrue to oneself.

Think about it:

Don't you feel it's time we bent our backs and chipped in to create a positively vibrant and amicable world that is not fragmented by narrow thoughts?

Well, charity always begins at home, so let's put our heads together and analyze how being true to ourselves will benefit us.

How Does It Help?

Here is 8 ways it will help you:
1. When you are true to yourself, your mind gets all steeled up. Most importantly, it has nothing to fear, no one to bow to.
This is because when you are true to yourself, you always do things that are just and right. And when you do everything fair and square, you have nothing to fear. Thus, being true to your own self makes you fearless.
2. Being true to yourself gives you a good feel. You look at people and things without prejudice, and do unto them what you feel is right and not what they do unto you.
These deeds fill you up with contentment, self-confidence and esteem, which in turn make you hold your head high. You are not just the first amongst equals - you are way too far ahead than being just number one.
3. When you are true to yourself, you automatically start speaking the truth - all the time. That kind of wins you respect from others - they start looking up to you and cling on to every word you say.
4. Let us now take a petty example from daily life: Assume your neighbor has just purchased a swanky, new sports utility vehicle (SUV), and also let's assume that you are not as well off as he is and cannot afford to buy an SUV.
In this situation, if you are not true to yourself, you might just go ahead and borrow money to pick up an equally good car just because envy is gnawing at your soul.
If you are true to yourself, you will not bother about your neighbor's new car and you will just go on with life as it was, because you know that you cannot afford a new car and if you borrowed money for it then you'd be stuck neck-deep in debt.
So, what does that tell you? - It tells you that being honest with yourself will make you levelheaded and think logically.
Above all, you stick to reality, do not succumb to peer pressure and in the process do not put yourself in difficult situations.
5. Being true to yourself kind of purifies your mind and rids it of the pile of psychological junk that has collected over the years.
You become more levelheaded and this in turn endears you to your family. The emotional bond you share with them only becomes stronger and hugs your entire family in a warm embrace.
6. Being sincere with yourself makes you believe in yourself, and you are no longer afraid of rejection.
7. You do not fear the risk of rejection when you know that you are true to yourself.
That is because rejection, anxiety, tension and other such associated emotions cease to matter in the normal course of life.
8. Finally, you improve your health because you are away from fear, greed, jealousy, anxiety, tension, loathing and prejudice.
Scientific studies have revealed that chronic negative thoughts tend to change permanently something in your body - perhaps at the cellular level or even genetic level - that makes you more prone to a variety of diseases.
You don't have any reason to hate yourself, your family loves you, you are satisfied and consistent with what you do, you don't feel guilty - and that is all that ultimately matters in life.

Conclusion

Jim Davis once said,
"The truth will set you free but first it will make you miserable."
He is right. The path to truth is strewn with thorns - but after the initial few steps, these thorns cease to matter - in fact, they are gone with the wind.

So, go right ahead and be true to yourself, because truth will not hurt you; it will awaken your soul. Just try it.

Guide to Being Happy With Yourself

by Kevin Sinclair -

Although most of us would much rather feel happy, from time to time we all get a little down in the dumps and this is quite normal in this day and age.

However, we need to be aware that out attitudes can affect how we feel and if we adopt a positive mind set we are sure to be back on the road to happiness sooner rather than later.

We can be as happy as we want to by simply counting our blessings.

When we take into consideration the fact that there are many children in hospitals suffering with all manner of debilitating illnesses who display such wonderful attitudes to life, how bad can what we have on our minds really be?

There is always a way to overcome our concerns if a positive attitude is taken.

Be thankful for all the good things in your life.

When you wake up in the mornings think about all the people who love and appreciate you and be grateful that they feature in your life too.

Quite often there may be a particular object which makes you think about good times.

For example, the beautiful flower arrangement reminding you that someone cares. Take a long look at the flowers each morning and the day will take on a special meaning.

An item such as this should be placed where you can see it, as soon as you wake up and this will put you in the right mood for the rest of the day.

Set yourself a plan for the day and stick to it. It does not matter if it's a business plan or simply the household chores you are going to carry out - having a plan makes your time important and more valued.

Of course, keeping yourself busy gets rids of the blues and also ensures you accomplish a lot as well. You will have a feeling of being worthwhile and your life will have a style and purpose which will be noticed and appreciated by those close to you.

When you feel like things are getting on top of you and that you are spiraling downwards, take a step back and do all you can to raise your spirits.

Your positive attitude will eliminate your negative thoughts and give you the motivation you need to get through the day, making sure you start the following day by being thankful for all the good things in your life.

Becoming an Effective Listener

by Kevin Sinclair -

One of the keys to success is effective communication and people notice when you are good at it.

If you are like a lot of people, you may think that better communication means you need to work on conversational and persuasive speech skills, when in fact how well you listen is much more important.

You can have the best conversational skills on the planet but if you do not know how to listen, it is useless. No matter how clear your points they still will not be understood or even heard, without listening skills.

Keep in mind that half of your communication effort is listening which means it is imperative you take the time to develop this skill as well.

Techniques to Build your Listening Skills:
1. Resist the urge to talk!
Especially when you are in the middle of a heated discussion, you begin to fast forward to what you will say next.
There is a temptation to start speaking even before the other individual is done. It may take extra effort, but you should do your best to keep your mouth closed while they are talking.
Instead of worrying about what you will say and how you will say it, focus on the other person. What they are saying and their body language are important.
2. Stay Interested.
While you are listening, your nonverbal communication is important.
If you appear uncaring or disinterested, the other people will pick up on that fact, which will severely limit the chances of a resolution. They will be less likely to open up and share their thoughts or concerns.
Connect with the other person. Nod your head, smile and make eye contact during the exchange. This lets them know that you are hearing what they have to say.
3. Mirror the conversation.
There is one simple technique that will ensure proper communication and that is to repeat back what you have heard.
Use an affirming tone to repeat key points or phrases. It is also good to give them a synopsis of what you just heard in your own words, this prevents mis-communications.
At this point you need to keep your opinions to yourself. When repeating their ideas and conversation you want to communicate that you have understood, not make judgments or voice opinions.
4. Ask Questions.
Asking questions is a great idea as well, you can gain further understanding on the conversation with a few well-placed inquiries.
Again, the important thing is that you fully comprehend what your partner is trying to say.
5. Exercise patience.
If you are dealing with someone who is shy or lacks communication skills you will want to exercise patience.
Pushing too hard may scare off your partner and bring the conversation to a premature conclusion.
6. Become a follower.
Just because you are practicing, listening does not mean that is your only job. Nothing says you cannot join in the conversation; you just do not want to overpower it.
When they ask for your input, give it but be sure they have finished their points first.
Practice makes perfect when it comes to communicating well. When you have successfully completed a conflict resolution, think about what you remember from the conversation. Write it down if need be. Did the other individual get to do a great deal of the talking?

All it takes is fighting the urge to dominate the situation; this will allow you to actually hear what others have to say.

Sitting down for eight or so hours a day can be overwhelming, and frankly unrealistic. This is why you need to take breaks during the day. It's good to take a 10 minute break once an hour.

If you don't have a clear plan in mind, then you will lose focus. Give yourself deadlines if needed. You can also see what you haven't completed at the end of the day, when you use list.
4. Find out what's the matter:
Sometimes, there is an underlying issue that is the cause of procrastination. If you can identify the issue, then you can overcome the procrastination.
5. Give yourself rewards:
Beyond taking a break, give yourself a real reward. Giving yourself a treat makes the hard work worthwhile.
6. Have self belief:
You'll gain more of a passion for life when you believe that you can accomplish your task. You'll start to move forward in life when you believe that you can.
7. Do your least favorite task first.
Getting the one you like least out of the way makes the rest of the task easier to do. It will also give you something to look forward to.

Creating and Maintaining a Balanced Life

by Kevin Sinclair -

A balanced life is harmonious.

Your work, family, play are all in harmony with each other. Your spirit is settled and you have a sense of peace. So many people have imbalances in their lives and in their spirits and in their lives.

Having a balanced life allows your creativity to flow and positivity to become the driving force in your life.

You are as a leaf on the stream, moving with the flux and flow of the water. The balance of your spirit and all aspects of your life leave you with a sense of deep peace.

Why Balance is Important

Balance allows you to have a peaceful experience. Imbalance in your spirit or in any area of your life creates disharmony in every aspect of your life. In short, imbalance in one area floods into the other areas of your life.

This leads to anxiety, insomnia, discontent, anger, depression and other negative feelings. You feel a need to rush, to move through life at lightening speed.

You miss out on so much, from your family to your job to your own life. When you have all aspects of your life in balance, you do not experience these feelings.

How to Achieve Balance

There are several actions that you can incorporate into your life to achieve balance.

These simple steps can be applied to any aspect of your life but balance begins from within with a cleansing of your spirit. It seems to grow from there and eventually reaches every part of your life. All you have to do is allow it.

Incorporate These Action Steps:
  • Be patient
  • Free your spirit of negativity - get rid of negative thoughts, negative feelings
  • Make a conscious effort to achieve balance in your life - take control and own it
  • Simplify your life - remove the clutter from your life, both figuratively and literally
  • Slow down - calm the frantic rushing about and slow down
  • Only you can make you happy
  • You can not make anyone love you
  • In order to love someone completely, you must first love yourself
  • Accept the things that you can not control - learn to let go
  • Spend quiet alone - for some people, daily quiet time is difficult to attain but even just 5 minutes can make a world of difference
  • Look for the good and the beauty in the things around you
  • Meditate
These things may seem simple and even common sense, yet so many people overlook them and move through life with such urgency, attempting to control everything and everyone around them - and they are miserable.

Practicing these simple steps daily will help you to achieve balance.

How to Maintain Balance

Achieving balance may seem difficult at times, but maintaining it can, at times, be even more difficult. Once the "honeymoon" is over it is easy to slowly slip back into your old habits.

The best thing that you can do is to take one step each week or each month. Incorporate that step into your life. The following week or month, incorporate another one..

Patience

As you take on the challenge to achieve balance in your life gradually you will, in effect, be practicing one of the most integral factors of balance - patience.

With that patience you are incorporating these practices into your life gradually as you allow each to become a part of your being.

Each step will bring you closer to a peaceful enlightenment of sorts.

Your priorities will shift, your focus will sharpen and your attitude will improve. There will be times when you are tempted to push all these steps aside and revert to your prior self, but if you breathe, close your eyes and regain your focus by releasing that negative impulse, you will maintain your balance.

Conscious Breathing

Conscious breathing is a wonderful exercise, not only to relax and become focused; it is also wonderful for maintaining balance in your life.

As you breathe in, be conscious of the positive air that you are drawing into your body, the positive energy and is moving through you. Each breath out releases you of the negativity that pervades and withers and burdens spirit.

Where do I go from Here?

With these tools before you, all you have to do is accept them. Only you can achieve happiness, contentment and balance in your own life.

Once you have attained these things, let it flow to others. You will likely have people asking you how you stay so calm. People may ask you why you are always at such peace.

Without a doubt, achieving and maintaining balance in your life will make your relationships stronger and your love much, much deeper. You will perform better at work and you will not feel burdened by things that you can not control.

The most important thing that you can do once you have found balance in your life is to show someone how to achieve it in theirs. Reach out your hand to a spirit that is suffering and your balance will be even more increased.
