The famous 80s pop star Pat Benatar once sang, “Love is a battlefield” and although relationships can often feel much like a war zone, A Course in Miracles teaches a much more profound concept about this idea: murder and Love cannot co-exist. This might seem like an obvious statement but everyday we “murder” the ones we love with judgments, guilt, anger and attack in some form.
We project our fears and resentments onto people, circumstances and situations without ever stopping to think of the affects we’re generating not just for the other person but for ourselves and the world.
As we give we receive and reinforce these negative thoughts in our mind.
There is the saying, “you always hurt the one you love.” Where do these ideas and sayings come from? They come from the myriads of people who have been hurt, abused, beaten, broken, saddened and left lonely for whatever reasons only to pass these feelings on to the spouses, children, parents, friends and co-workers that come within range.
An amusing anecdote that captures this picture is the one where the boss yells at the worker, the worker goes home and yells at his wife, the wife yells at the children, the children kick the dog, the bites the cat, the cat eats the mouse and so the world continues…
Although this cycle of abuse is natural for most of us, there is a way to break free from the hidden value it represents and we are offered a strategy for a very different perspective.
We are encouraged to rise above the battleground to see the Love behind the challenges, pain and suffering that in truth only seems to dominate the picture.
From this elevated standpoint we are free to see clearly the meaninglessness offered in our daily arguments, choices, fears and problems. We are set free from the forms and bodies that bind us to artificial beliefs about ourselves and others and begin to move into a new place of limitlessness, light and love.
When the temptation to return to the battleground strikes, be strong and do not leave your place on high but quickly choose a miracle (shifted perception) instead of murder. And God Himself and all the lights of Heaven will gently lean to you and hold you up, for you have chosen to remember the truth.
This place of truth (love) offers everything you want and sorrow of any kind is inconceivable.
With the choice to rise above battle and conflict only, the light of love will fill your awareness and shine on you forever. It is your past, your present and your future; always the same, eternally complete and wholly shared with everyone.
Do not let this opportunity to see things differently slip past. It is offered to you by God Himself as a way out of sorrow, guilt and suffering.
Love is your true nature. Let it be your Guide. Rise above, rise above, rise above!
